Essential Oils and the Metaphysical

Aromatherapy and the Metaphysical
Essential oils have been long used for medicine and healing purposes.
Aromatherapy is a healing art that is centuries old and encompasses the metaphysical, magickal and spiritual.
From light workers to astrology, the essential oils you use each day have a history that far exceeds a perfume roller. I’ve been deep diving into the metaphysical benefits of aromatherapy during my studies in Master Aromatherapy and thought you’d find this interesting.
Have a look below at some common (and some of my favourite) essential oils and their links to spirituality and ritual.

Frankincense

Planet: Sun

Element: Air and Fire

Chakra: Third Eye/ Crown

Increases connection to spirit, raises consciousness, spiritual strength and protection, ritual and ceremony.

Rituals throughout time: Egyptians uses frankincense to release the soul from the body in burial rituals. Ayurveda healers have long incorporated frankincense in some form as part of purification and healing ceremonies. Frankincense has been used in many cultures as the foundation for incense used in daily ceremony.

How to use today: Frankincense can be used to open the 7th, or Crown Chakra, granting us access to divine guidance. Apply frankincense topically to pressure points or the third eye during meditation or inhale in a diffuser.

Lavender

Plant: Mercury

Sun Sign: Virgo

Element: Air

Chakra: Throat/ Crown

Open communication, the oil of truth, self-expression, connection to our highest self, balances emotions

Rituals throughout time: Lavender essential oil has been used by cultures across the world. From the Romans who used it in bathwater, the Egyptians who used it for embalming to the ancient Greeks who used lavender for beauty rituals.

How to use today: To cultivate calm, apply a few drops of lavender to hands, rub them together, cup hands and inhale the scent – makes for grounding practice to start the day. Lavender is also used before bed to assist with sleep. Apply a few drops with a carrier oil and massage on the soles of your feet at night. You could even make a bedtime mist with purified water and lavender oil to spray on your pillow before bed.

Lemon

Planet: Moon

Element: Water

Chakra: throat/ heart

Cleansing, uplifting, energising, joyful, improve focus and decision making

Rituals throughout time: Lemon was often used by old time mediums during seances to attract high vibrations and the higher spirit guides. In the Eastern world, lemons were revered as good luck charms to the household. In Ancient Egypt, Lemon Essential oil was used to embalm the dead and lemons were placed in the tombs along with figs and dates for the journey to the afterlife.

How to use today: Lemon acts as a psychic cleanser and came be used to cut ‘energetic cords’ with negative people or situations in your life. Lemon encourages focus and mental clarity. It opens one up to the many phases of life, and when diluted in water, can even be used to cleanse negativity from objects such as crystals, jewellery, and stones. You could wipe a few drops of lemon oil on to your desk each morning to increase focus and drive or use it in a diffuser while you’re working.

Ylang Ylang

Planet: Venus

Element: Water

Chakra: Sacral/ heart

Balances masculine and feminine, restores confidence, filters negative energy, organises thoughts, charges spiritual and romantic connections

Rituals throughout time: Used in healing ceremonies for centuries. Revered for its many medicinal benefits.
